Project description

SICRIS

The welfare of farm animals has an important role in modern society.  The development of animal welfare can be achieved by the introduction of new knowledge in the fields of ethology, housing systems and health care. In the project three scientific organizations from two Slovenian universities together with the biggest poultry producer and public agricultural professional service are included.  Researchers from Veterinary faculty are focused mainly on poultry species; meat type turkeys, broilers and layers. For the first time, a report on the welfare of turkeys in Slovenian flocks will be provided and a draft protocol for assessment of turkey welfare will be developed. One of our goals is also to optimise the welfare assessment protocol for broilers and to introduce diagnostic methods for detection of keel bone deformities in laying hens.
