Traineeship
Practical training in veterinary medicine
UL VF offers foreign students a number of traineeships at its clinics and institutes via the Erasmus+ SMP and CEEPUS programmes, bilateral agreements or as independent mobilites.
As there is a lot of interest and capacities fill quickly, we recommend planning your traineeship with us a year in advance.
To apply for a traineeship at UL VF, send your application to VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si with the following information:
- your name, home institution and year of study,
- the programme through which you intend to perform the traineeship (Erasmus+, CEEPUS, bilateral agreement, independently),
- UL VF’s clinic(s)/institute(s) where you would like to work and your area(s) of interest in the field of veterinary medicine or topics you would like to cover during your traineeship,
- possible and/or desired dates for the traineeship (as specific as possible),
- certificate of Slovene or English language proficiency at least at the level B2 on the CEFR scale of the European Language Portfolio Levels.
UL VF's clinics and institutes
The Small Animal Clinic covers the healthcare of cats and dogs and performs the following specialist and diagnostic services:
- Internal Medicine

- Computed Tomography (CT)
The Clinic for Reproduction and Large Animals consists of 4 units:
Clinic for Reproduction
The clinic performs diagnostics and treatment of fertility disorders in males and females, andrological examinations of breeding animals and embryo transfer in domestic animals.
Clinic for Ruminants and Pigs
The clinic performs diagnostics, treatment and prevention of various diseases in cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.
Clinic for Breeding and Health Care of Horses
The clinic is comprised of the Clinic for Horses, which performs diagnostics, treatment and prevention of horse diseases, and the Department for the Selective Breeding of Equidae, which performs professional tasks in the livestock industry in the field of horse breeding.
Infrastructure Centre for Sustainable Recultivation Vremščica
ICSR Vremščica carries out educational and research activities and is known for its organic production of sheep's milk and cheese. It is located in southwestern Slovenia's Karst area, near the village of Divača on the Vremščica plateau.
ICSR Vremščica accepts 1 trainee per year during lambing season, which is from January 15th to March 15th. The trainee is provided with accommodation at the site.
The Institute of Poultry, Birds, Small Mammals and Reptiles performs disease diagnostics and solves health problems in intensive poultry breeding.
The Clinic for Birds, Small Mammals and Reptiles operates within the Institute of Poultry, Birds, Small Mammals and Reptiles and performs diagnostics and treatment of birds, small mammals and reptiles.
The Institute of Pathology, Wild Animals, Fish and Bees consists of 2 units:
- Department of Pathology, Forensic and Administrative Veterinary Medicine
- Department of Breeding and Healthcare of Wild Animals, Bees and Aquaculture
The Institute of Preclinical Sciences consists of 4 units:
- Department of Physiology and Pathological Physiology
- Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology
- Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics
- Department of Anatomy, Histology with Embryology and Cytology
The Institute of Microbiology and Parasitology consists of 3 units:
- Department of Virology
- Department of Bacteriology and Mycology
- Department of Parasitology
The Institute of Food Safety, Feed and Environment consists of 2 units:
- Food Safety Department
- Department of Environment, Animal Nutrition, Welfare and Hygiene
Traineeship application checklist
To help guide you through your application process for a traineeship at UL VF, we have prepared separate checklists for each individual programme.
Please note that the checklists only contain what you have to do on our end; your home institution may have additional requirements.
Application
Send your application to UL VF at VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si containing:
- your name, home institution and year of study,
- the programme through which you intend to perform the traineeship (Erasmus+),
- UL VF’s clinic(s)/institute(s) where you would like to work and your area(s) of interest in the field of veterinary medicine or topics you would like to cover during your traineeship,
- possible and/or desired dates for the traineeship (as specific as possible),

Pre-arrival
- Prepare your Learning Agreement for Traineeships and send it to VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si to be completed by UL VF.
- Fill out the University of Ljubljana's online application form.
- Arrange your health insurance if required.
- Arrange for a visa or temporary residence permit if required.
- Arrange your accommodation.
- If you wish to terminate your traineeship, inform us at VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si.
During your stay
- Upon arrival inform us at VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si and check in.
- Regularly check the inbox of the e-mail address you provided when applying for the traineeship.
- In case of problems, complications and questions, contact us at VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si.
- If you wish to terminate your traineeship, inform us at VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si.
Upon departure
- Receive your letter of confirmation and other certificates at your request.
Application at UL VF
Send your application to UL VF at VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si containing:
- your name, home institution and year of study,
- the programme through which you intend to perform the traineeship (CEEPUS),
- UL VF’s clinic(s)/institute(s) where you would like to work and your area(s) of interest in the field of veterinary medicine or topics you would like to cover during your traineeship,
- possible and/or desired dates for the traineeship (as specific as possible),
- a certificate of your Slovene or English language proficiency at least at the level B2 on the CEFR scale of the European Language Portfolio Levels.
Application for a CEEPUS scholarship
- When your traineeship is confirmed by UL VF, apply via the CEEPUS website (for more information contact your CEEPUS coordinator or the international office at your institution).
- Follow the instructions sent to you by Slovenia's national CEEPUS office CMEPIUS (you will receive these instructions along with all relevant documents after your application has been confirmed by all parties).

- Fill out the University of Ljubljana's online application form.
- Arrange your health insurance if required.
- Arrange for a visa or temporary residence permit if required.
- Arrange your accommodation.
- If you wish to terminate your traineeship, inform us at VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si.

During your stay
- Upon arrival inform UL VF's Office for Scientific Research and International Affairs at VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si and check in.
- When notifed by UL VF's Office for Scientific Research and International Affairs, sign the CEEPUS grant agreement and receive your scholarship.
- Regularly check the inbox of the e-mail address you provided when applying for the traineeship.
- In case of problems, complications and questions, contact us at VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si.
- If you wish to terminate your traineeship for any reason, inform us at VFinternational@vf.uni-lj.si.
Upon departure
- Fill in your Mobility Report at the CEEPUS website.
- Receive your letter of confirmation and other certificates at your request.
