The Centre supports numerous research programmes in the fields of veterinary, biotechnology, zootechnics, medicine and other biomedical sciences.

The Experimental Centre for Domestic and Laboratory Animals (UL-VF) operates within the Network of Research Infrastructure Centres of the University of Ljubljana (MRIC-UL), implemented through co-financing by the Slovenian Research Agency. The Centre supports numerous research programmes in the fields of veterinary, biotechnology, zootechnics, medicine and other biomedical sciences.

An integral part of the Infrastructure Centre are:

The Vremščica Centre for Sustainable Recultivation breeds indigenous Slovenian breeds of sheep, cows and pigs. At the Vremščica estate research is ongoing in the field of ecotoxicology, the impact of grazing on pasture fertility, monitoring the physiological, reproductive and production characteristics of indigenous breeds of animals for breeding in the Karst area, as well as some ecotoxicological research. The Centre provides research support for various research projects and programmes and is also available to external users. It can also provide full research logistical support and research support.

Various physiological (mainly neurological), pathophysiological and toxicological studies are undertaken at the Laboratory for Animal Genomics. Through projects and programmes, research into gender differences is undertaken as well as studies of the long-term effects of stress on brain development and function, the mechanisms of weight regulation, and the impact of new biologically active substances on body function and their potential use in medicine. In collaboration with the Faculty of Pharmacy, new substances for the treatment of autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases and substances that affect weight management are being studied. In collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Maribor, research is being carried out to study the basic mechanisms of weight regulation in mammals, and, in the framework of international projects, the Centre has worked with colleagues from various European countries in developing new bone implants and development of the spleen in mammals. Within the Institute for Preclinical Sciences, there are various well-developed behavioural tests in mice and rats, toxicological studies, gene expression studies in different tissues, work on isolated organs and more.

At the Institute of Preclinical Sciences, acute and chronic nutritional studies are conducted in accordance with OECD guidelines for outsourcers in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
