As the second recognised horse breeding association in Slovenia, the Institute for the Breeding and Healthcare of Horses at the Veterinary Faculty (hereinafter: DPO VF) is involved in the implementation of a common basic breeding programme in the field of horses.

Breeding Programmes and Organisations
As the second recognised horse breeding association in Slovenia, the Institute for the Breeding and Healthcare of Horses at the Veterinary Faculty (hereinafter: DPO VF) is involved in the implementation of a common basic breeding programme in the field of horses.
The following recognised breeding associations (hereinafter: PRO) are involved in carrying out the common core horse breeding programme:
- Trotter Breeding Association of Slovenia
- Slovenian Association of Breeders of Posavec Horse Breed
- Slovenian Haflinger Horse Breeders Association
- Veterinary Faculty
- Association of Horse Breeders of the Slovenian Cold-blooded Breed
- Slovenian Lipizzaner Breeders Association
- Slovenian Warmblood Breeders Association
The DPO VF executes most expert tasks of the established breeding programmes for all breeds, except for the Lipizzaner, and ensures co-ordination of work between associations and executers based on the programme of expert tasks formulated in consent with the expert councils of the PROs.
The tasks are implemented for all breeds of horses that are currently bred in accordance with the established breeding programmes. The implementation of the tasks in the programme provides the basis for the implementation of all established breeding programmes.
The DPO VF is the agent responsible for implementing the expert tasks connected to the common core breeding programme, and is responsible for the studbooks for the following breeds:
- Slovenski hladnokrvni konj,
- Posavski konj,
- Haflinški konj,
- Ljutomerski kasač,
- Kasaški konj,
- Slovenski toplokrvni konj,
- Angleški polnokrvni konj,
- Arabski polnokrvni konj,
- Arabski konj,
- Islandski konj,
- Šetlandski poni.
Breeding Programmes
The DPO VF participates in the preparation and implementation of the breeding programme in accordance with the Co-operation Agreement with:
- PRO SIQHA
- PRO International Association of Breeders of Bosnian Mountain Horses
- Oslarija, Institute for the Breeding of Donkeys (breeding programme under preparation).
NOTE TO BREEDERS OF ICELANDIC, ENGLISH THOROUGHBRED, ARABIAN THOROUGHBRED and ARABIAN HORSES, and SHETLAND PONIES
The attachment contains a statement about including an animal into a breeding programme.
In the Republic of Slovenia all breeding programmes for all the above-mentioned breeds are implemented by The Institute of Breeding and Health Care of Horses at the Veterinary Faculty in its function as a recognised breeders’ association (PRO) in co-operation with Slovene breeders associations for individual horse breeds.
All breeders who wish to include their animals in a breeding programme, or to participate in established breeding programmes published on the DPO VF website, are hereby informed that this can be done by completing the BREEDING PROGRAMME STATEMENT, which must be signed and sent to the following address:

Participation in a breeding programme, and subsequent participation in the common core breeding programme, enables the implementation of all zootechnical tasks within the competence of the PRO that are partially funded by the Ministry of Agriculture. The fees are determined by the PRO price list in the annual programme plan and have been approved by the Ministry following the PRO’s proposition. Breeders who do not participate in the breeding programme are not entitled to financial support based on the above-mentioned.
