Francisco A. Uzal, DVM, FRVC, MSc, PhD, Dipl. ACVP

Francisco A. Uzal, DVM, FRVC, MSc, PhD, Dipl. ACVP, is a Distinguished Professor of Diagnostic Pathology, Branch Chief of the San Bernardino Laboratory of the California Animal Health and Food Safety, and Chair (interim) of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, School of Veterinary Medicine, UCDavis.

He trained in Argentina (DVM), Sweden (FRVC and MSc) and Australia (PhD and Post-Doc). He is a leading expert on clostridial diseases of animals with special emphasis in enteric diseases, and a special interest in gastrointestinal diseases of horses, ruminants and other farm animals.

Dr. Uzal has published ~ 370 articles in peer reviewed journals. He is the senior author of the chapter on “Alimentary Diseases”, for the 6th and 7th edition of “Jubb, Kennedy and Palmer’s Pathology of Domestic Animals” (2016 and 2025) and the first author of the 1st and 2nd edition of Clostridial diseases of animals (2016 and 2026). He has also authored chapters on clostridial diseases in several traditional veterinary textbooks such as Diseases of Poultry, Diseases of Pigs and Textbook of Internal Medicine. He has an active NIH research program on clostridial diseases with special emphasis on enteric diseases produced by Clostridium perfringens.

He is a Diplomate and Distinguished Member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, a member of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians and a member of the Argentinean Academy of Agronomy and Veterinary. He is the past-president (and founding member) of the Latin Comparative Pathology Group, the Chief Executive Officer of the Davis-Thompson Foundation, the President-elect of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians and Vicepresident of the Anaerobe Society of the Americas. Dr Uzal is a Section Editor and Photo Editor of the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, and Associate Editor of Anaerobe and Veterinary Research Communications, and member of the editorial board of several other journals. He is fully bilingual (Spanish and English).

Veterinary Faculty of the University of Ljubljana is organizing a Training course on the use of animals in procedures for research and educational purposes.

We would like to inform you that the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Ljubljana is organizing a Training course on the use of animals in procedures for research and educational purposes.

The course is organised in thematic modules. The core modules are aimed at all categories of personnel who work with or supervises work with animals in procedures: animal cartakers, scientists and technicians carrying out procedures, project managers and animal welfare officers. Other modules are tailored to specific roles.

The training will take place from October to December 2025 in the afternoons at the Veterinary Faculty. The planned start date is 13 October 2025.

Only appropriately trained personnel who fulfil the requirements of the Regulations on the Conditions for Performing Procedures on Animals (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 32/21) may work with animals in procedures for research and educational purposes. One of the requirements is the successful completion of basic training to the prescribed extent.

Thematic modules and their duration: animal caretakers - EU function C totalling 30 hours, scientists or persons performing procedures on animals – EU function A totalling 40 hours, project managers – EU function B and animal welfare officers – 80 hours.

*The refresher training course is aimed at returning participants who have already completed the course for cariying out procedures and are now applying for the project manager or animal welfare officer modules.

The fee includes lectures and practical work, study material, refreshments during breaks, examination and the certificate of successful completion.

The above prices are subject to the condition that at least 15 participants register for the course.

Workshop designed for veterinarians with experience in cytology who wish to deepen their expertise in the diagnostics of liver diseases.

This two-day workshop focuses on the diagnostic potential of hepatic cytology in small animal medicine. While cytology is widely used in diagnosing neoplastic diseases, its application in evaluating liver pathology remains underutilized.

The workshop aims to:

Strengthen understanding of primary and secondary liver diseases through cytological interpretation
Improve diagnostic skills of experienced cytopathologists
Provide tools for accurate reporting and clinical decision-making
Correlate cytological findings with clinical, biochemical, and histopathological data

Participants will:

Learn key cytological features of hepatocytes and biliary cells
Perform microscopic examination of real cases, supported by relevant clinical data
Compare cytological findings with corresponding histological slides and final diagnoses

Topics include:

Non-neoplastic hepatocellular changes
Inflammatory and chronic hepatic diseases

Lecturer

Dr. Carlo Masserdotti graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Milan in 1990. Since 1993, he has specialized in clinical pathology with a particular focus on diagnostic cytopathology, attending advanced training courses both in Italy and abroad. He has authored several scientific papers and delivered lectures at national and international conferences.

From 1998 onwards, Dr. Masserdotti has been a lecturer in cytology courses organized by SCIVAC. He served as President of the Italian Society of Veterinary Cytology (SICIV) from 2001 to 2004 and as Vice President of the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology from 2003 to 2006. In 2005, he was recognized as a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ECVCP). He also earned a postgraduate specialization in Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Brescia in 2008.

Currently, Dr. Masserdotti works as a consultant in anatomic and clinical pathology at IDEXX Laboratories. His research focuses primarily on the cytological features of spontaneous tumors and inflammatory diseases in companion animals, with a particular emphasis on hepatic cytology and histopathology.

He is also the author of the book "Canine and Feline Liver Cytology" published by Wiley Blackwell in 2023.

A challenging event in collaboration with EUTOPIA, the focus learning community “Veganism vs. Animal protein consumption".

Veterinary Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, in collaboration with EUTOPIA, learning communities is supporting the focus learning community entitled "Veganism vs. Animal protein consumption”, led by Dr Modest Vengust and Dr Laura Šimenc. As part of this project, we have prepared a challenging event that will focus on the culture of animal protein consumption. The first lecture will be given by Prof. Federica Marie Giovanna Timeto, who teaches sociology of the arts and critical animal studies at Ca´Foscari University in Venice. Her rather revolutionary views on society consuming animal proteins will be balanced by the lecture of Modest Vengust, Professor of Veterinary Medicine at the Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana.

From 20 to 24 September 2021, an international meeting of the project "Investigation of Traditional Cheese Production Technology and Standards in the Light of European Union - BestCHEESE" was held in Turkey within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme and under the auspices of the Eskisehir Agriculture and Forestry Directorate.

The aim of the project is to standardize the production of dairy products by developing national hygiene and production standards.

Beside the Veterinary Faculty of the University in Ljubljana, research institutions from Turkey (Eskisehir Agriculture and Forestry Directorate, Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Batman Agriculture and Forestry Directorate), Italy (Azienda Sanitaria Provinciale di Agrigento) and Slovakia (Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra) are participating in the project. For Slovenia, Tilen Vake, DVM and Neža Žnidaršič, DVM from the Veterinary Faculty participated in the meeting.

The meeting was opened by Ender Muhammed Gümüş, Eskişehir Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, the representative of the host institution. The project coordinator, Dr. Hatice Olcay, DVM, gave a presentation on the project activities, impacts and outcomes. During the week, the participants of the meeting had the opportunity to visit four dairy farms dedicated to the production of local cheese and other dairy products. They visited production facilities in Eskişehir (Yeşilçay Dairy Enterprise, TMR Food, Tarım Kredi Dairy Enterprise, Mahmudiye-Çifteler Milk Producers Association). In addition to the tours of the cheese production facilities, several lectures were given on technological processes and European hygiene standards in the production of traditional cheeses. Participants from the Ljubljana Veterinary Faculty gave lectures on the production methods of Tolminc, Mohant, Bovec and Nanos cheeses.

Further project meetings will take place in the European partner countries, the meeting is also planned in Slovenia. The conclusions of the project from this workshop will be the basis for the development of innovative and professional approaches that will lead to the modernization of milk processing and production in terms of quality and control standards in all EU countries. The main outcome of the project will be 10 lessons in five different languages, accessible to everyone, and two different training modules.
