Računalniška tomografija (CT)

Computed Tomography (CT)

Computed tomography is an advanced imaging technique in which precise x-rays and a computer create accurate cross-sections and a three-dimensional image of the body.

The obtained images are much more detailed than ordinary x-rays, which is why the method is used when it is not possible to make reliable diagnoses using other diagnostic techniques. CT diagnostics are of benefit in many branches of veterinary medicine, and are of particular importance in treatment planning.

For example, CT scans are indispensable in the planning of extensive surgical procedures, since it is possible to determine with great precision the extent of neoplasms, the position of broken bones and the involvement of surrounding tissues in disease processes. To better differentiate between different tissue types (e.g. between muscle, fat and bone), contrast agents are used, which are administered intravenously to animals prior to imaging.

As animals must be completely at rest during the examination, a short general anaesthesia is required for CT imaging.

Since May 2017, CT examinations have also been available at the Small Animal Clinic. Using the new Siemens Soma Scope 16-slice CT scanner, images are taken of:

head
chest
stomach
spine
limbs

Your veterinarian will refer your animal for a CT scan using the electronic referral system. Your veterinarian can also call or contact us via email and give you a referral that you must bring with you on the day of the procedure. In this case, referrals are accepted from Monday to Friday between 8am and 7pm by calling: 01 4779 277 or by email to: rentgen@vf.uni-lj.si
